B. How do I setup a New Account? Return to Top
- There are two ways to setup a new account, and both can be started by going to www.friendwithaboat.com.The first, and easiest method is to sign in to FriendWithABoat.com with your Facebook Account. From the home page, click the blue Login with Facebook button. If you are not currently signed in to Facebook, you will be asked to enter your account email address and password, and then click Log In. You will then Allow FriendWithABoat.com access to your personal information so we can create your account.The second method is the traditional sign up process. From the home page, under the Create Accountheading, enter your desired username, email address, password, and other required information. Follow the easy steps to complete account sign up.After signing up using either method, you will be taken directly to the Activity feed page after logging in where you can explore the rest of the site.
C. What if I forgot my username or password? Return to Top
- If you sign in using Facebook, then request to retrieve your Facebook email address, or reset your Facebook password by going to www.facebook.com/recover.php.
- If you sign in through FriendWithABoat.com, then from www.friendwithaboat.com click on the Lost your password? link just under the Log In section. Enter your username you will receive an email instructing you how to reset your password. If you need to recover your username and password, enter your email address in that field and both will be sent to you.
II. Setting Up Your Profile
A. How do I Add or Update Personal Information to my Profile, such as Location, Interests, whether I Own a Boat, etc.? Return to Top
- We are working on adding sections for member interests, but it is currently unavailable. The account information that can be changed is accessed by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Profile → Edit. Here you can change your name, location, boat ownership information, etc.To see what information other members can see, click the Profile → Public tab.
B. How do I add/change my profile picture? Return to Top
- We are working on adding photo libraries to the site so you can have several pictures on your account, but currently you may only use one profile picture.You can add a new Avatar (or profile picture) by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Profile → Change Avatar. Here you can click the Choose Filebutton and browse your computer for a suitable picture. Once selected, click the Upload Image button.After upload, you will crop your picture by dragging the corners of the boundary box so it forms a square around the portion of the image you want to use, and adjust it up/down or left/right so it’s positioned correctly. When satisfied, click the Crop Image button. You will see your new Profile picture and a message saying your new avatar was uploaded successfully. III. Adding/Removing Friends
A. How do I Request to be a Friend of another Member? Return to Top
- To search for another member, click the blue Membersbutton at the top of the site. There are a few methods to search by:First, you can locate members using the map of the world at the top of the Members page. You can zoom in on a location and when you see a red pin, click on it and the Member’s username and picture will appear. NOTE: to close the member’s information box on the map, to look at another Member’s pin, click the “X” in the top right of the information box. Click the Member’s username and it will take you to their Profile page. In the top right of the user’s Profile, click the Add Friend button and a Friend Requestwill be sent.Alternatively, on the Members page, you can scroll beneath the map and see ALL members on the site. If you are already friends with a specific Member, you have the option to click the Cancel Friendship button, and if you are not friends, can click the Add Friendbutton.Lastly, you can search for Members using different criteria in the Search Members box on the right side of the Members page, beneath the Map. We are adding functionality to search within a radius of your target ZIP code, but currently you must search using exact ZIP codes.
B. How do I Cancel/Delete my Friendship with another Member? Return to Top
- You can cancel your friendship with another member by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Friends. Here you will see a list of all your Friendships and can click the Cancel Friendship button – this will immediately cancel your friendship. If you have a change of heart, you can click the Add Friend button that appears and a new Friendship Request will be sent.
IV. Posting on Walls
A. How do I post Something on a Friend’s Wall? Return to Top
- You can post comments, pictures, videos and links on your Friend’s Wall, or Like other’s comments, by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Friends. Here you will see a list of all your Friendships and can click on their name to go to their Wall. Alternatively, if you are in your own Profile, you can click Friends to the left of your Wall, to see your Friendships. You can only post on someone’s Wall if you are already Friends.
- To post a Comment (i.e. just text), simply type your message into the Comment box and click the Post Update button to submit.
- To Upload a Picture on your computer, click the camera image to the lower left of the Comment box. Click the Upload a file button to browse your computer for an image. Once selected, the image will automatically begin uploading. You can also type a comment in the Comment box if you wish. Once complete, click the Add photos button to submit your picture (and comment, if any). A. How do I Follow or Like A Member’s Boat? Return to Top
- To search for a boat to follow, click the blue Boats button at the top of the site. There are a few methods to search by:First, you can locate boats to follow using the map at the top of the Boats page. You can zoom in on a location and when you see a red pin, click on it and the Boat’s name and picture will appear. NOTE: to close the boat’s information box on the map, to look at another boat’s pin, click the “X” in the top right of the information box. Click the Boat’s name and it will take you to that boat’s Profile page. In the top left of the Boat’s Profile, click the Join Boat button and a Requestwill be sent to the Boat Owner.Alternatively, on the Boats page, you can scroll beneath the map and see ALL boats on the site. B. How do I Stop Following or Delete A Member’s Boat? Return to Top
- You can stop following or delete another Member’s Boat by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Boats. Here you will see a list of all the Boats you are following. Boats that you are following will have a button to the right of them that says Leave Boat. Clicking that button will delete that Boat from your followed boats. If there is no button to the right of a listed boat, it is because that is your Boat. To delete your Boat from your Profile, see Section VI. Adding, Configuring and Deleting Your Boats.
VI. Adding, Configuring and Deleting Your Boats
A. How do I Add My Own Boat to my Profile? Return to Top
- Adding your own boat is easy! Click on the blue Boats button at the top of the site. On that page, click the Create a Boat button and enter your desired information. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required. It is highly recommended that you include your boat’s storage address or ZIP code in the Add a Boat Setup. Otherwise Members will not be able to find your boat geographically on our site. NOTE: Personal information will not be shared with other users on the site. Follow the steps for completing the Details and Extras pages. Click Next Stepafter each page, if satisfied.On Settings screen, select whether the boat is Public (any site member can join this boat without prior approval), Private (only users who request membership and are accepted can join the boat), or Hidden (only users who are invited can join the boat). Also select who is allowed to invite other Members to join your boat: All boat members (anyone who is on the site who has joined your Boat is allowed to invite other Members to join your Boat), Boat Captains and Mods only (only you or those Members you have appointed as a Boat Administrator/Co-Captain or Moderator can invite other Members to join your Boat – see below: How do I Promote another Member to a Moderator or Administrator (Co-Captain) of my Boat?), or Boat Captains only (only you or your Administrators/Co-Captains can invite other Members to join your Boat – see below: How do I Promote another Member to a Moderator or Administrator (Co-Captain) of my Boat?). Click Next Stepwhen ready.On the Avatar screen, you can stick with the default life preserver or click the Choose File button to select an image on your computer to use as your boat’s main image. Click the Upload Image button after selecting your image. After upload, you will crop your Boat’s picture by dragging the corners of the boundary box so it forms a square around the portion of the image you want to use, and adjust it up/down or left/right so it’s positioned correctly. When satisfied, click the Crop Image button. You will see your new Profile picture and a message saying your new boat avatar was uploaded successfully. Click Next Stepif satisfied.On the Invites screen, you can invite your existing Friends to join your Boat. When you are done, click the Finish button to complete the Add a Boat setup. At any point, you can click the Back to Previous Step button to go back to a prior screen and make changes.
B. How do I Promote another Member to a Moderator or Administrator (Co-Captain) of my Boat? Return to Top
- A Member must first be joined to your Boat before you can promote them to a Moderator or Administrator (Co-Captain) of that Boat. You can identify another member as a Moderator or Administrator of your Boat by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Boats. Here you will see a list of all the Boats you are following, including the boats you have added. Click on the name of the Boat you want to make changes to and the Boat’s Profile page will load. Click the Admin link on the left side of the Profile and then click on the Members tab. You will see a list of all the Members following your boat. To the right of their name will be links allowing you to Promote to Mod or Promote to Admin. Select the appropriate option and that Member will be promoted accordingly.
C. How do I Demote or Remove/Delete a Member who is Following my Boat? Return to Top
- There may come a time when you need to remove another Member from your Boat. To do so, click the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Boats. Here you will see a list of all the Boats you are following, including the boats you have added. Click on the name of the Boat you want to make changes to and the Boat’s Profile page will load. Click the Admin link on the left side of the Profile and then click on the Members tab. You will see a list of all the Members following your boat. To the right of their name will be links allowing you to Demote to Moderator (if Admin), Demote to Member (if Moderator), Remove from Boat (but Member could rejoin), or Kick & Ban (to remove from Boat and prevent Member from rejoining). Select the appropriate option and that Member will be demoted or removed accordingly.
VII. Creating, Editing and Deleting Event Outings
A. How do I Create an Event for my Boat, or a Boat I am a Moderator/Administrator of? Return to Top
- Click on the blue Events button at the top of the site. On that page, click the Create Event button and enter your desired information. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required. It is highly recommended that you include your Event’s launch address or ZIP code in the Create Event setup. Otherwise Members will not be able to find your Event geographically on our site (if you do not know the exact address, type the ZIP code and click Map It. You can then move the pin to the correct location by zooming in an clicking on the Map). Follow the steps for completing the General page. Click Create Event and Continuebutton when ready to continue.On the Documents page you can choose whether to upload a PDF, DOC, TXT, DOCX, XLS, PPS, PPT or ZIP with special information about your Event. Click Next Stepbutton when ready to continue.On the Logo page, you can stick with the default life preserver or click the Choose File button to select an image on your computer to use as your Event’s main image. Click the Upload Image button after selecting your image. After upload, you will crop your Event picture by dragging the corners of the boundary box so it forms a square around the portion of the image you want to use, and adjust it up/down or left/right so it’s positioned correctly. B. How do I Edit or Delete an Event I Created? Return to Top
- To Edit an Event you already created, click the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Events → Active. Here you will see a list of all the Active Events you are Hosting. Click on the name of the Event you want to make changes to and the Event Profile page will load. On the left side of the page, click Edit Event. You can go through the General, Documents, Attendees or Logo sections and make changes, or click Deleteto delete the Event.If you need to Edit the Geographic Location of your Event on the Event Map, scroll down to the Venue Name field in the General section and click the Manually change coordinates button. Use the Zoom In slider on the left of the Map and the drag function to find the correct location. Left-clicking on the Map will reposition the pinof your Event Location.Click the Save Changes button at the bottom to apply your changes to the Event. You can continue making Edits, or click the Home button on the left to see your updated Event Profile.
VIII. Searching for and Scheduling Event Outings
A. How do I Search for an Active Event Outing? Return to Top
- There are a few ways to search for an Event. Click on the blue Events button at the top of the site. On that page, click the Active tab to see all Active Events on the site. If you see an Event you want to join, click the Attending or Maybe Attendingbutton beneath the Event image.Second, on the Events page, you can click the Options drop down on the top right to select a specific Category, Venue or find an event within so many miles of your ZIP code.Third, on the Events page, you can use the Search field in the top right to search keywords in the Event title. Ex. “fishing”. Lastly, on the Events page, you can click the Search tab to search all Active Events on the site within a certain radius of a specific address. Leaving the Location field blank will use your location specified in your Profile. You may also include keywords in the Search Term field to narrow your results. Ex. “fishing”. NOTE: If you have never gone on the Boat before that you are requesting to attend, it is highly recommended that you coordinate with the Boat owner either through messaging on the site or by phone and confirm your attendance and any special requirements.
B. Can I Automatically Calendar an Event I’m Attending? Return to Top
- Yes, you can download an iCalendar (*.ICS) file by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Events → Active. Click on the name of the Event you are attending to go to that Event Page. On the left side of the page, click the iCalendar Downloadbutton to download the ICS file. iCalendar is used and supported by a large number of products, including Google Calendar, Apple iCal, GoDaddy Online Group Calendar, IBM Lotus Notes, Yahoo! Calendar, Evolution (software), KeepandShare, Lightning extension for Mozilla Thunderbird and SeaMonkey, and partially by Microsoft Outlook.
C. Can I get Driving Directions for Event I’m Attending? Return to Top
- Yes, you can get Driving Directions by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Events → Active. Click on the name of the Event you are attending to go to that Event Page. On the left side of the page, click the Directions button. Select your Mode of Transportation (Driving, Walking or Bicycling) and enter your Start Address.
IX. Leaving a Review for a Boat after an Event Outing
A. How do I Leave a Review for a Boat after an Event Outing? Return to Top
- You can Leave a Review with a star rating on another Member’s Boat by clicking the red My Account button at the top left of the site, then Boats. Here you will see a list of all the Boats you are following. Clicking the name of the Boat will take you to that Boat’s Profile. On the left side of the Profile, click Reviews. Here you can leave a Written Review detailing your outing experience (good or bad), including a star rating (1 star = horrible / 5 stars = excellent). Click the Post My Reviewbutton to submit.Presently you may only leave One Review per Boat, unless you Delete your original Review first.
